Respirator face masks

In circumstances where a person is likely to be exposed to a working environment with gas or material in the air, protection is essential. There are a wide variety of different respirator masks available to suit different conditions, and to ensure that personnel are safe, it is necessary to understand what type is required for each situation in order to provide the best possible protection.

Respirator masks fall into 3 basic categories, which are worn in different circumstances and require different training and precautions. Essentially the top 3 types are SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus), PAPR (Motorized Air Purifying Respirators) and finally Exhaust Breathing Devices.

SCBAs are used in industrial circumstances where the user needs access to a safe and guaranteed air supply. The name: Self Contained Breathing Apparatus means that the equipment provides a microenvironment that is separated from external contaminants or chemicals. These are made up of two components. A large air tank is worn on the back and connected to an airtight mask worn over the head.

The air tank, which is under high pressure, will generally provide enough air for up to an hour, but larger versions are available that last longer. These are necessary in circumstances where a safe air supply is not available, and where the operator must have a safe air supply for him to survive.

Essentially, an industrial SCBA respirator mask is identical to the equipment worn by a diver, and the same precautions should be taken, such as keeping track of the amount of air available at any time. There are two main types of masks, open circuit and closed circuit. With an open circuit system, once the air has been exhaled, it will be released into the environment. When this is not appropriate, for example, where the environment should not be polluted, a closed system can be used. With a closed SCBA system, exhaled air is stored and can be reprocessed to give the user more time to work.

A powered PAPR mask or powered air purifying respirator is generally designed for use in circumstances where particulates must be removed from the air supply, which is otherwise safe to breathe. With these, an air pump with a filter is attached to the strap, and this provides a constant supply of filtered air to a separate mask. There are a variety of situations under which a PAPR mask is the ideal respirator. When using a paint sprayer or industrial sanding or sanding device, the air will be contaminated with paint or fine dust which can cause problems if inhaled. By wearing a PAPR respirator mask, people are protected from things in the air, rather than protected from the air. There are a variety of different filter options available along with a PAPR mask, and the right ones should be used for any situation. The various filters are ordered by the minimum particle size they filter from the air supply. Some thicker filters are designed to remove relatively large dust particles, while increasingly fine filters are available that can remove elements as small as virus particles (HEPA filters) from the air. Using the correct filter is essential as the efficiency of the air pump will be governed by the ease with which you can push air into the respirator. If a very fine filter is used, the pump must work harder, and consequently the battery life will be much shorter, which means that the user will have to make frequent changes to their system to maintain its protection.

Exhaust breathing devices are sometimes mistaken for smoke hoods, and while they have many similarities, there are also subtle differences between the two products. An exhaust breathing device is designed to provide the user with a temporary supply of clean and safe air in an emergency.

A smoke hood is specially designed for situations where the air supply is compromised by smoke, and these will often simply filter out high levels of smoke particles in the air to ensure a few moments of protection when escaping from a airplane. An exhaust breathing device may be specialized for a particular situation, for example if you are in an environment where gas may be leaking, and most devices offer protection in the form of a small can of gas that will provide a few moments of security.
